Malcolm Mitchell, of Angaston. Just moved in to Angaston in February of this year. Farming background, come from station country originally. Muloorina Station Marree, near Lake Eyre, and then moved down to Eden Valley for 14 to 15 years, and just moved into town in February. So this is the first time I ever lived in town in my life. Yeah I was born out there and went to me schooling, and worked there for 30 odd years. So pretty much what I know is desert country. Yep, so sheep, cattle, horses, yeah, in the desert country. That's what, you know, I've done most of my life. Yeah, just came down here for - do a bit more with me horses, and now I've come into retirement, so we've just moved into town.
I thought when we moved in town I'll wait until we got our first bill and just see what it was, whether to go to solar or not. Got our first bill and it was... ...fairly big. So we decided to go and do solar so that later on, when I do stop work that, you know, we haven't got that that expense later on, yeah. Oh, it was, it was a pretty big bill - that first bill we got was a thousand dollars for a quarter, and we thought we can't afford that. So that's why, you know, we decided to go solar. It was mainly heating, because that was the winter months when we - in that quarter was the winter months, so that was mainly heating's what that cost was. Our cooling we've got a rapid air conditioner so that doesn't take a lot. But there was the heating through the winter was where that cost was.
It's got upfront costs, but we're hoping that we can pay for this in you know, four years, four and a half years. And then, you know, we won't have those bills when I stop working. So, you know, it's not cheap to put in, but down the road it's going to be a big saving, yeah.
How did bill shock help stockman Malcolm discover the benefits of solar power?
