I think the most important thing for a solar power system is, number one make sure that your home actually has sunlight that's getting through to the rooftop, so that we've got plenty of sunlight to capture for the solar power panels. That's important part. If we've got too much shade, then the system is not going to work correctly. Some of the ways we can overcome that shade is using individual panel management, where every panel works independent from the next. That's the inverter that we select to be able to cope with some dappled shade. If there's a lot of shade across the roof, we can't do anything about that.

We need sunlight for the solar panel to work. Some of the homes that we come to have partial shading. It might just be in the morning, but the middle of the day and the afternoon is optimum for solar. So one of the strategies that we take is to put the panels across the roof in areas that are down to harness both the day and the afternoon. So we might strategically put panels on the east and west say, so we can pick up morning and afternoon, and spread the load right across the day. On one of those roofs we may choose to do individual panel management, so that we can optimise these panels, because only six out of the 20 may have shade, and then during the day the shade is lifted and all the array comes into sunlight.

Yeah one of the things that we do is we hop on the roof with a tool called a pathfinder. It's this curve lens. It's very accurate, its got a longitude and latitude map. So we have a look hour by hour, month by month, to be able to see the shading environment for that rooftop, so that we can make the best choice of where to position the panels, and so that we're moving away from as much shade as possible. It's definitely about tailoring the right solution, and it's not just a one size fits all. We're going to make sure that the solar solution that we're providing for your rooftop is going to do its job.
