- We've now got other technologies that we put into the solar system where we can divert that energy straight into something like a hot water tank or a swimming pool heat pump, a pool pump, or an air conditioner even. We've recently installed 10 kilowatts into this house in Wahroonga. We've got two solar inverters. We've got a 9.3 kilowatt hour LG Chem battery. And then we've also got another device up here called an emersion control device and what this does is this collects any of the surplus energy that would normally be sent out onto the grid once the house loads is satisfied.

Rather than going on the grid and getting nothing for it, they will actually use that power in their electric hot water tanks in the house. They've got two of them in there. And what that's going to do in effect is turn both of those hot water tanks into batteries. We're installing technology now that's allowing us to capture the energy or the excess energy that would normally be sent out onto the grid that you'd be given virtually nothing for, and we're harnessing that energy and putting it into devices like hot water systems.

A hot water system now is really a cheap form of a battery. We can set up the hot water system, purely energised by the sun. Storing energy in a battery is one form of storing energy. Another form of energy is storing it in water. In a hot water tank, there's a whole bunch of energy. So if we can use the solar energy from the roof and direct that into the hot water tanks, we've got in effect, a battery, just that it's stored in water and not in lithium. We've got technology available now that we can harness the sun's energy and put it directly into heating your hot water system electrically, which means you don't have to have solar hot water panels on the roof. We're doing it all from the solar power system.
