- In 1997 we broke away from a broad acre arrangement that was part of the family business that my father started in 1955. In '97 I wanted to be a little bit more diverse in growing in the field so I looked at getting into hydroponics. We're planting around 25,000 to 30,000 individual seedlings on a weekly basis. The operation has three facets to it, so it has a team that works in the hydroponic arrangement. It also has a team that works out in the broad acre where we're supplying product into our processing. And it has our processing arm as well, and we also have a DC in the Adelaide produce markets. So we have in total around 30 to 35 employees. We have 24 hour continuous pumping for our hydroponic arrangements. We also have cool rooms that are continuously running 24 hours. And we also have the processing operation that consumes a reasonable amount of power during those working hours.
- Our commercial clients are looking to insulate themselves from rising energy cost, so putting a quality solar panel system on, that would last a long period of time, is the ideal solution.
- [Dino] We're looking at about $4,000 to $5,000 a month in savings, but predominantly, we use a lot more through the summer where we're getting more daylight hours which we're getting a benefit through the solar. We did have a smaller solar system in, and we saw the advantages of going to the bigger system.
- The important factors and commercial jobs. The customers want to actually insulate themselves from future energy costs. You know, it's hard in South Australia. To combat the cost of electricity in this state, so by investing in solar, you can have a three to five year return.
- And at the end of the day, we decided to go with LG and Generate Energy because LG is a massive company, know we would have backing from LG. And we were very confident that LG was the way to go, and we were very confident that Generate Energy was the local supplier. And LG also backed Generate Energy, which was very important to us.
- Return of investment is all about regaining as much money as you can from a system making it last as long as you can. So choosing a better quality product is always going to last longer and be beneficial, particularly ones with high warranty like LG with a 25 year full product warranty, so you can guarantee that that system is going to generate power for 25 years.
- [Dino] I'm a very happy customer and I'm now looking at putting in some ground mounts where I can use on my broad acre as well.
How is a high quality solar system helping to reduce operating costs of a hydroponics farm in SA?
