- Well I grew up in Canberra. Canberra's my home. So certainly this is where I wanted to grow the business. This is where my family are. And this is where I intend to stay. Fairly entrepreneurial at heart so I thought it would be a good business to get into. And certainly it's a very rewarding business. I know what we do, needs to be a profitable business but the environmental aspect of this is really the reason I got into it. I see solar as a very key part of our sustainable future and a way to tackle climate change. Our warehouse has just gotten bigger over the years as we've grown so we've moved offices in Canberra about three times now as we've sorta grown, grown as a business. But yeah recently we just moved into this new showroom. And we've got a big warehouse just down the road. Which is about 600 square meters now. Well our testing site's on top of our warehouse. We got about 30 kilowatts of solar panels up on there. A number of inverters that we're testing in the room as well. We've got batteries also on the outside wall which we test, again, run them through their paces. We put these in here for several months before we go and install the bulk of them out in the field. And ultimately that leads to better quality. But we have lots of installation teams. They're all on staff. And the quality of the installer, to us, is just as important, if not a touch more important, than the quality of the product that we're installing. So they're all very highly trained. We've got about seven or eight teams that work for us directly. And they're very very passionate about solar and very very passionate about the workmanship.
- We're here today to do our one year maintenance check. We installed this system in June last year. So it's time for the one year check, just to see how things are going. The system's performing really well. Quality is everything. We're installing something for a customer. So obviously the customer wants it to work. I want it to work.
- [Benn] So we have internal quality assurance programs. So we do regular audits of our own installs. And then there's also an additional external inspection that's done for every system that we install. So right the way through, from making sure that, the panels are installed in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines, right the way through to making sure that all the components we use are gonna last just as long as the equipment that we're installing will. But one of the main differences between SolarHub and some of our competitors is that we do it all in house. There are solar only retailers out there that will sub-contract the installation. And for me that tends to lead to a lower quality outcome for the customer. So we have lots of internal teams. And those teams are very passionate about what we do and it means that there's very good lines of communications between the people that are selling the systems, the people designing the systems and also the people installing it. So overall the customer gets a better outcome because all of those people are working on the same team.
When people are looking at solar, really the main drive is to reduce their electricity bill. Probably the second thing is obviously doing something about climate change. It's particularly evident in Canberra. We find a lot of our customers are very focused on that and that's another driver for them to buy a solar system. I think the key thing here is thinking long term. You know there's no point going out and buying a cheap system it's only gonna last you three to four years and then you're back replacing those components. So one of the biggest cons in the industry is this concept of a performance warranty. So what you'll see is a product warranty which is really what we're used to in terms on manufacturer's warranty. That they'll replace it if there's a fault. And that's typically 10 years for most panels. And then there's this idea of 25 year performance warranty. So they warrant that the panel will perform in a certain way for all that time. It's really fairly worthless. Because at the end of the day if the panel isn't performing properly it's usually due to a fault. So there's a way for them to wriggle out under these performance warranties. LG is different. They actually offer a 25 year parts and labor warranty all the way through that period. So if there's a fault in that period you're gonna find that someone like us, or anyone in the LG dealer network, can go out, remove that panel, put a new one back on and it won't cost the customer a cent.
